Automated laboratories — robotic platforms that plan, execute and analyse experiments with limited human intervention — alter that calculation. Once a protocol is encoded, running it again costs materials and machine time rather than months of a postdoctoral researcher's life.
Where it works first
- Chemistry and materials science, where protocols are already highly specified
- High-throughput biology, where the bottleneck is handling rather than insight
- Any field with standard reagents and measurable endpoints
It works least well where the experiment depends on tacit skill, bespoke apparatus, or field conditions that cannot be encoded.
Verification stops being an act of professional courage and becomes a line item.
The caution
Automation reproduces methodology faithfully, including its flaws. A poorly designed study run a thousand times produces a thousand poorly designed results with impressive consistency. The value of automated replication depends entirely on the quality of the protocols fed into it — which puts the emphasis back where it belongs, on experimental design.
